A LOYAL LUTON FAREWELL
Wednesday, 07 July 2010

So while the prima-donnas are now all sunning themselves in the likes of Florida and Barbados the World Cup is coming to its climax and again most England fans are back home having once again been let down by our so-called "stars".

Notwithstanding the predictable disappointment of watching England perform dismally my first visit to South Africa was a fascinating and worthwhile eye-opening experience of a country that still has many deep-rooted problems but one which has fully encompassed the whole ethos of the tournament.

It is also interesting to see that once again the countries that are prospering are those that have the best teams and not necessarily those playing their eleven best individual players. This is something that over the last few years we are only much too familiar with at Kenilworth Road although things did turn for the better in the latter part of last season. Hopefully Messrs Money and Brabin will have learned from this and ensure this message is driven home next season so we can emulate the success of those that have prospered previously in this league without needing a glut of ‘star' names.

After five years as Chairman of Loyal Luton I also wish to announce to everyone that I am standing down from this fantastic position. Given ongoing personal circumstances I also want to devote more time to my son's youth football team in a coaching capacity (god help them!!), while also giving someone else the opportunity to continue driving LLSC forward and hopefully overseeing more luck on the pitch than under my tenure!!

It has been five years full of so many emotions, ups and downs and one that I can certainly confess to having enjoyed, somewhat strangely. Over this time the name of Loyal Luton has been frequently raised into the national spotlight albeit for circumstances we would rather have not experienced but one which has shown the men from the boys and the wolves from the sheep. The membership has grown strongly in four figures over this period and we have played a major role in both the history and future of our great club and one we should all be extremely proud of.

Over these five years I have been very fortunate to meet so many interesting and fun people whilst making so many good friends. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all Committee members and other members that have helped us drive Loyal Luton into the force it is today. We could not have got there without the sheer effort, commitment, loyalty and hard work from so many behind the scenes that often goes on unnoticed and I will be eternally grateful for all the help, assistance, guidance, advice and sometimes blind faith that has come in my direction.

Despite stepping down I leave Loyal Luton in a robust shape with a dedicated and strong Committee still in situ who will undoubtedly continue the impressively good work they have all been undertaking over the last few years. Loyal Luton is always open to new blood joining the Committee or helping out so if you are interested then don't hesitate to contact a Committee member direct or go via our website.

In true Oscar fashion there are so many people I would like to thank for their help over the years, however, that list would probably be longer than one of my usual update mails!!! You know who you all are so a massive THANK YOU although unfortunately for you it will be far from goodbye as I'll still be going to all the home and as many away games as possible and will continue to help Loyal Luton where and whenever I can.

I'll also like to spare a thought for all those special people close to so many of us that are no longer with us today in body but remain in our thoughts every day having been such important influences in our lives. You'll never be forgotten.

Finally, if I can convey one final message it is that you all stay positive. I know it can be hard at times, especially when we go to some of the tin-pot grounds in this depressing league and think where we were only a few years back. We have certainly been through some tough times over the last five years that have made us the people we are but we are still here, we are still fighting, hopefully still smiling but need to look forward rather than dwell on what has gone on before us. We can't erase the history behind us but we can write the history before us. We still have a Club that has a tremendous future and if we show the teamwork off the pitch then hopefully we the fans can be the catalyst that can re-open the door for the return of the glory days. So stay strong, stay believing, importantly stay enjoying your Saturdays (remember this is meant to be our enjoyment after a stressful week at work), stay fully behind the team and if nothing else stay LUTON TOWN forever and keep spreading the word.

In the meantime keep enjoying this fine Summer weather and I look forward to catching up with many of you in August for a nice cool beer as we start our 2010/11 promotion assault.

Cheers

Kev

The Luton Lord's Prayer by Mark Ledsom

Eric Morecambe

Who art in heaven

Hallowed be thy name

Let the goals come

They can have one

So long as our boys get seven

Give us this day a win

And forgive us our indebtedness

As we forgive those who have netted against us (except Watford)

Lead us out of administration

And deliver us from Guilfoyle

For we loved the Eighties

The power and the glory

For ever and ever

LUTON!
