A
lot of people have heard of Loyal Luton
Supporters Club but it seems that most of our publicity up until
recently has been relatively negative, with people only speaking our name when
it comes to various activities away from Kenilworth Road. Far too
often we have heard people say, "Yes,
Loyal Luton is that bunch of militant people hell bent on causing trouble and with
no real care about the football club and the interests of the majority of the fans". So let us enlighten you fellow supporters of what we are really about and what
we really stand for.
Our
Club was formed in 1990 as a break-away group when certain members of the
official Luton Supporters Club thought that it was important to collectively
air independent views, regarding certain issues important to the fans.
What was formed then was the nucleus of the Club that we have today.
We
always felt that the official Supporters Club towed the Club line regardless
and it was about time that an alternative voice was heard. We have no
beef with any of the other Supporters Groups still around today but wanted to
form an establishment that allowed those with more of an opinion to have a
platform to be represented from.
So
what we had was a good social crowd meeting on match days, and monthly, at the Brache
Sparta Club, off Dallow Road, for what turned out to be some
memorable, yet chaotic times! Strong opinions were voiced after most
matches and the ‘Depleated'
fanzine was created - in our somewhat biased opinion still the best Luton Town fanzine to
have been! (radical, yet fair and of course, anti Kohler!). For even
then we could see what was going to happen, having looked into his somewhat
dubious past - oh, the benefit of hindsight!
The
first Chairman of LLSC was Lenny Pengelly, before the infamous Tom Shanley took
over and carried Loyal Luton through the roller-coaster mid-90's. Tom was
succeeded by John Tiernan in the late 90's before another old stalwart
Bob Bates took us through the millennium. After five years at the helm, Bob
stood down and Kevin Lennon took over in the summer of 2005 and remains the current
Chairman today.
Throughout
these times our support for the team was unwavering, but there were various
conflicts regarding monies given to the Club via player and match sponsorships,
etc. We eventually ceased to donate any more funds, whilst Kohler was at the
Club, apart from via our scheme in conjunction with the Nat West Bank, to
encourage young supporters' to come to Kenilworth Road. Promoting kids to
come and watch LTFC is something we strongly believe in and remain very proud of
and since the departure of Kohler we have enjoyed many more match and player
kit sponsorships.
Over
the years we have campaigned for many things important to fans such as: disbanding
the membership scheme; the return of away fans; allowing cash turnstiles on the
day of the match; and allowing Luton fans to sit safely
in the Oak Road when other parts of the ground have
been sold out and there is small away support.
Every
Chairman seems to have been involved in many major battles over the years,
however, they have never let things get on top of them. They have always stayed
strong to the beliefs of the fans they represent and still all remain very
committed to the cause. Tom Shanley was in situ during the nightmare Kohler
years, while John Tiernan worked extremely hard to help form FLAG, that LLSC
actively supported. Bob Bates started to have it easy but then the whole John
Gurney saga rose its ugly head and LLSC was instrumental in ousting Gurney and
helping establish Trust in Luton. Once matters settled
down, Kevin Lennon was leading LLSC but it wasn't too long before suddenly
being faced with the FC looking to relocate out of the town and up to J12. A
strong campaign has been mounted to try and keep the Hatters in Luton during
which time membership has increased at record levels and the profile of Loyal
Luton has not only grown considerably but gained an all round respect.
The
new Chairman has also tried to move LLSC as much as possible into the 21st
Century while through other active members trying to kick-start the social side
again, which in its hey-day saw some memorable parties hosted. Member meetings
take place on an as needed basis, sometimes fortnightly, sometimes monthly or
bi-monthly, however all members will get regular e-mail updates.
The
two things that set LLSC aside from every other supporters group are its
independence and the fact that everyone has a voice that will be listened to. Football
is all about opinions and we recognise that and encourage people to use LLSC as
a channel to air their view. Loyal Luton can and does
change things and will continue to do this for as long as there is a Luton Town
Football Club.
We
also can't let it pass without mentioning that on one of our many drunken
evenings, we decided that it would be a good idea to form a Sunday football
team. We were fed-up with teams like Celtic running top-class sides in
this area, when our hometown Club had no representative team whatsoever.
Starting many years ago in Division 7 of the North Home Counties League, we
finished Champions in our first season and worked our way through the leagues
under the stewardship of Tom Shanley and Nick Flack, picking up various
trophies along the way to eventually playing in the Premiership and currently
in Division 1.
We
are an open Club and everyone is welcome to join - £10 currently gives you life
membership, as well as a much sought after, extremely attractive,
LLSC pin badge!
The
link to join is on this website and if you have any queries feel free to use
the Chairman link which sends an e-mail directly through to the current Chairman,
who will reply directly to you.
